The Leir Institute Library
Ruth S. Schiller, Knowledge Manager, The Leir Institute for Volunteer Management, Yad Sarah
"Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else,
you must run at least twice as fast as that."
(Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, 1871)

Alice's predicament reflects one of the incessant concerns of professionals in the 21st century. One must read professional publications in order to stay updated, learn and be exposed to new solutions and practices, but who has time?
Volunteer management is a profession that is still in the making and an evolving field of knowledge. During the development of a new discipline someone needs to be entrusted with the knowledge. There is an abundance of material about volunteer management in print and online. The material is easily available, but this does not mean that volunteer managers are aware of its existence, know how to find it or are free to spend time searching for it.
The Leir Institute for Volunteer Management aims to further the volunteer management profession by providing practical tools; tracking trends and innovations; compiling knowledge; and making the knowledge accessible in formats that are tailored to the needs of busy professionals. The library staff search and retrieve information about volunteer management and organize it in ways that are convenient and accessible to volunteer managers.
Accessibility is important because different readers have different needs. Many of our readers prefer to read material in print and not on line. Much of the professional literature is in English, but most of our readers prefer to read in Hebrew, and therefore we translate articles in order to make them accessible to our Israeli audience. Our material is available in an array of formats: in print, on Internet sites, directly through e-mail; and on "The Marker Café" online social network. In addition, we have diverse bibliographic aids such as syllabi of courses in volunteer management and tangent fields, Hebrew article abstracts and references to professional Internet sites.
Upon establishing the library, we systematically searched Israeli and international websites that deal with volunteer management. We collected books, practical and academic articles, tips, worksheets, training materials, forum discussions, conference publications and more. All the relevant items were categorized and abstracted, and catalogued with detailed keywords that are customized to the volunteer management field. The items are available online and on the shelves at the Leir Institute. During 2009, the library will be implemented on the web, and will be freely accessible for searching and retrieving materials from any PC.
A major problem of knowledge management is information overload. For example, a Google search of the term "volunteer management" in Hebrew yields 8,080 results, a similar search in English returns 534,000 results and a Google Scholar English search shows 2,630. As we were collecting material, we began to see that information was repeating itself and we realized that there was no need to strive to encompass everything written in the field. Some subjects became saturated and we decided to stop looking for additional items and concentrate on determining the best materials. We defined core topics such as volunteer recruiting, screening and training, and checked to make sure that each topic had adequate coverage. Currently, we are working on reviews of the core topics. In the reviews we describe how the material is useful and who will benefit from reading it. Thus, instead of spending time browsing through an abundance of items, our readers can skim through the reviews and determine which materials are worth reading.
We are currently conducting literature searches on three parallel levels:
  1. Periodic tracking of practical and academic publications and web sites in the volunteer management field.
  2. Defining subtopics (such as risk management in volunteer organizations; relationships between paid staff and volunteers; hospital volunteering) and conducting searches on each subtopic.
  3. Conducting specific searches upon request (for example, recruitment for volunteer hot lines).
We would like to invite you to visit the Leir Institute Library at the Yad Sarah building in Jerusalem, enjoy the materials that we have collected for you and use our library services:
  • The reading library that comprises hundreds of articles, books and aides on volunteer management in English and Hebrew;
